Concrete cover mapping is an essential part of concrete condition assessments and should be paired to carbonation and chloride ion penetration depth measurements in order to identify whether chloride or carbonation fronts have advanced beyond the steel reinforcing layer. When this happens, the steel is at much greater risk of corroding. Cover mapping is carried out to BS 1881 Part 204.
